Naming files/attachments

Posted by Keelan on January 22nd, 2007 Comments 1 Comment

Why can’t people name their files/attachments properly?

Whether its a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, a photo/image, a PDF, whatever… given it a name that identifies what it is, to everyone, not just you.  How hard is that?

I just got an email with a file attached that I needed to save.  It was called ‘DEF_CA_MKit_07.pdf”.  So, of course, I needed to rename it to save in on our system so my colleagues and I would be able to find it later without having to open it to know what it was.

The attachment was a 2007 media kit/ad rate sheet for a Canadian publication.  We’re going to get a whole bunch of these over the next few weeks.

Why didn’t they name the file ‘Name of Publication – Canada Media Kit – 2007′ or something like that?  It would have taken the same length of time – seconds.

My particular favourite is when people send photos that clearly have been labelled with the default name given when downloaded from the camera (e.g. IMG021.jpg).  Come on!  Rename the thing before you send it out!  And it wouldn’t kill you to put a date on it.

Edelman’s Guide to the Blogosphere

Last week Edelman released “A Corporate Guide to the Blogosphere: The New Model of Peer to Peer Communications”.

Edelman says, “the paper is designed to help clients who operate across multiple regions understand how the dynamics of blogging, as well as blogger demographics and behavior vary from country to country.”

Number of mentions of Canada, where Edelman has two offices: ZERO.

Mitch Joel of Twist Image made the same observation.

Rick Mercer only posts to his blog periodically (post prior to this was Dec. 28th), but this one is a doozy.

Bob “I love the Leafs” Cole

Posted by Keelan on January 20th, 2007 Comments Leave a Comment

Toronto scored the first goal tonight against Pittsburgh.

Bob Cole said something along the lines of: boy, they’ve looked great on this road trip and its looks like we’re in for a good one tonight.

Final score (with a late goal by Toronto): Penguins 8 – Leafs 2

Good call Bob.

I haven’t seen many Penguins games this year, but wow, if they can hold onto Crosby, Malkin and Staal – look out!

The Sens had a nice win over Boston.  They’re currently in a playoff spot, the Leafs aren’t.

Pitching a Blogger

I’ve been reading Ted Demopoulos’ Blogging for Business for quite a while now.

I find his posts insightful and concise.

This one offers some simple and good advice on how to pitch a blogger.

Really not much different that pitching a ‘traditional’ journalist.  Do some research to figure out their ‘beat’/area(s) of interest and personalize the contact.

Wikipedia founder to set up more reliable source

Posted by Keelan on January 19th, 2007 Comments Leave a Comment

A report in The Gazette today by Sarah Schmidt says “Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger wants to unseat the phenomenally successful free online encyclopedia boasting 1.58 million English entries as the go-to source for information with his new wiki project, Citizendium.”

Citizendium will still be open source, but all postings will go through expert editors and anonymous contributions will not be allowed.

“There is definitely a need for an alternative free source of reliable articles,” Sanger said.  “The main thing from the user’s point of view that Wikipedia is lacking is reliability. A lot of articles are really good, but there’s always a question in the back of my mind, ‘Can I rely on it?’”

Rick Mercer Report Report

This week Rick was in Alberta practicing with the UofA women’s volleyball team and driving a tank at CFB Edmonton.  I found this week’s show a little light on political humour, which is mainly why I tune in each week, but still some funny stuff nonetheless.

My favourite segment was a mock ad for a new CBC program: Dillap-A-Dome.  Which will be the first to crumble?  Olympic Stadium in Montreal or BC Place in Vancouver?
