David Eaves, a frequent speaker and consultant on public policy, wrote an interesting piece on the banning of access to Facebook by government organizations in the May 17, 2007 Globe and Mail.
In the article, he says ‘An inspired public service shouldn’t ban Facebook, it should hire it.’
His idea of building a Government Facebook to enable better co-operation is an interesting one.

Social media and collaboration tools scare the hell out of governments. The appropriate top down management tools aren’t available to them.
David Eaves’ suggestion that the government simply hire Facebook to create a government version is practical, efficient and cost effective. All the reasons why they most likely will never do it. My guess, if someone in government was actually forward thinking enough to trial something like this, is that we would end up with a VERY expensive internal system that would do less, cost more and be used by few. Nature of the beast.
37signals’ suite of applications is another good example. Simple, effective tools for pennies a day.
